If you want to fill up with a nutritious and local lunch, a downtown restaurant has you covered.
The Thoughtful Squash on Kent Street has a gourmet buffet on Fridays – it’s not Chinese food and it’s not pizza.
The restaurant is a new arrival to Charlottetown, but got its start in Mount Stewart. It’s known for good food made from local ingredients.
Owner Cathy McInnis thought a move to Charlottetown was a good next step.
“I like to move like this,” she says moving her hand up in a step-like motion.
“Not like this,” her arm angles up sharply.
The Thoughtful Squash wanted to feed everyone fast, but getting orders out to diners on a tight lunch schedule was tricky.
McInnis said that about 60 per cent of the diners opted for the buffet, a table full of seafood chowder, meatloaf and gravy, haddock with tomato basil white sauce, creamy mashed potatoes, salad with house-made vinaigrette, macaroni salad and rolls.
McInnis is modest but proud of her staff.
“The meatloaf is definitely gourmet. It is so good.”
The buffet leaves her staff breathing room to prepare menu items for customers.
Cynthia Dennis ordered one of the gluten-free options.
“I had a burger with a bun for the first time in a long time,” she said.” And it actually tasted like a bun!”
