As P.E.I. continues to grow, so does its music scene. For a 19-year-old local DJ the scene is starting to blow up big time.
Mike Fielding has been listening to Dub Step music since high school before many people on the Island were introduced to the bass-filled genre. A year ago he started making his own mixes. He fell in love with the music and realized he was talented.
Confident in his music he sent an original song to a popular local DJ, 28-year-old Shawn Campbell.
“I could tell that this kid really knew what he was doing, and when it’s good to put yourself out there when trying to get noticed,” said Campbell.
Campbell has been mixing for years. He had his first show in 2009 when the DJ at a club owned by a friend cancelled. They needed someone to play and Campbell was the man for the job. It turned out great and ever since he has been performing at local bars like the Alibi, Hunters, and Bahbahs.
The two now host shows at the Alibi lounge called Sub Sessions where they both perform. They also have DJs from out of town perform. They are trying to do the shows once a month and hoping to build a bigger audience.
Aaron Kelly is a fan of both these DJs and goes to all of their shows.
“I had Mike play at a party once and everyone loved it! These guys are talented.”
The audience they attract are mostly college students but there are people of all different ages at their shows.
“There’s this 40-year-old couple at all of the shows and they just love it,” said Campbell.
There are few DJs on the Island but their numbers are growing. Campbell and Fielding hope to become more even.
